Romanesque in the Vall de Boí: A Walk Through History (Right From the Hostal)

Few people know that hidden in the heart of the Pyrenees lies one of the most impressive collections of Romanesque art in Europe. And the best part? You can start the route on foot, right from Hostal La Plaça, in the middle of Erill la Vall. The Vall de Boí is not only nature; it is also stone with a soul shaped by centuries, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Santa Eulàlia of Erill la Vall

Right next to the hostal you’ll find Santa Eulàlia, a flawless example of Lombard Romanesque architecture. Its six-story bell tower, slender and elegant, rises like an arrow into the sky. Inside, the atmosphere is cool and mystical. You’ll also find a replica of the famous Descent from the Cross, a sculptural group known for its expressive power.

Route through the most vivid Romanesque

From here, you can take a circular route to visit other churches such as:
  • Sant Joan de Boí, with mural paintings that come to life.
  • Santa Maria de Taüll, with the iconic image of Christ in Majesty.
  • Sant Climent de Taüll, a European Romanesque classic and a living symbol of Catalonia.
All the churches are restored and can be visited with a joint ticket, with accessible schedules and routes. In summer, many of them offer videomapping shows projecting the original paintings onto the interior walls—an experience that takes you straight to the Middle Ages.

A landscape that enhances it all

What’s most surprising is the combination of art and surroundings. These churches aren’t in museums—they live among meadows, peaks, and streams. The valley’s silence, the flight of a vulture, or the passing of a flock all add magic to the experience.
